The Importance of Communication in General Culture

Communication Issues in General Culture

In an era where the world is shrinking and information is rapidly accessed through communication channels, different communication channels have become the main factors that constitute our general culture. While general culture was acquired through living, seeing, and traveling in past centuries, today this acquisition is mostly obtained through communication channels. So much so that we first analyze the places we intend to visit and explore through mass media and social media environments before we discover them. From this perspective, we can divide communication into two parts. First, personal communication, which we have been using since the earliest times of humanity, and second, technological social media environments that have dominated our minds in the last twenty years.

Personal Communication in General Culture

While the ease of access to information is an advantage of our time, problems such as the accuracy of this information and the ability to analyze information further increase the importance of communication. This is because the root cause of these two problems is the pollution in communication sources and the misinformation that is transmitted to or from us, reaching the recipient in distorted forms with various exaggerations and understatements, rather than as they are. At home, on the street, and in the rest of our lives, we are subjected to a bombardment of information from our surroundings. Such frequent and constant information causes us to include it in our general culture without finding the opportunity and time to analyze the incoming information. While communication is one of the most important steps in our general culture, it also poses a significant problem that can lead to mental pollution. Therefore, instead of increasing communication sources in our general culture, we should decide which communication sources to draw from and constantly check the accuracy of these channels. While we used to access information first through books and then through television, today we can access the information we want with a small search on the Internet and listen to a video from our bed. While accessing information is so easy, we must analyze why people with general culture are constantly highlighted by their mentors. In conclusion, we can say that how information reaches us is as important as the means through which it reaches us. The knowledge we gain in environments where we can converse, consult, and even debate is much more effective and lasting for the development of our general culture.
