The Execution of Çandarlı Halil Pasha

Halil Pasha began serving as Grand Vizier in 1439 during the reign of Murad II. When Murad the Great abdicated the throne and the young Sultan Mehmed II ascended, he effectively governed the state. During the years he governed the state, he prevented unrest by curbing the harsh interventions against the Anatolian beyliks. When the Crusaders mobilized against the Ottomans, he ensured Murad II returned to the throne, and the Ottoman Empire triumphed in the Battle of Varna. After the Battle of Varna, the Ottoman army campaigned in Morea, and a large part of the region was conquered. Çandarlı Halil Pasha continued his role as Grand Vizier after Mehmed II became Sultan again. However, he had various disagreements with Zağanos Pasha, the tutor of Mehmed II. Knowing that Mehmed II wanted to campaign against Byzantium, Çandarlı Halil Pasha opposed the Sultan and Pasha Mehmet on this matter. He argued that a moderate policy should be pursued against Byzantium. This led to the formation of the idea among the state officials and the army that he had accepted bribes from Byzantium. Furthermore, Çandarlı Halil Pasha considered Mehmed II to be an inexperienced and unsuccessful Sultan. Besides, the fact that he might prevent his reign and cause his father to become Sultan again made him fear the Sultan. As the Ottoman army began preparations for the conquest of Istanbul, he argued that this siege should be lifted immediately. This led to the acceptance of the idea that he had accepted bribes. After the conquest of Istanbul, he was dismissed from his post as Grand Vizier on June 1, 1453. Subsequently, Çandarlı Halil Pasha and his children were arrested. His children were later released, but Halil Pasha was imprisoned for 40 days at the Golden Gate in Yedikule. On July 10, 1453, he was executed by blinding. It is rumored that Çandarlı Halil Pasha looked directly at the Sultan instead of bowing his head.
